Estuary Guide Contest

East River CREW is excited to announce their illustration contest– open to all students ages 8-16 in NYC. Our East River estuary guide is meant to help readers recognize the fauna of the East River estuary, or all the animals and scenery that you might encounter if you were out on the water or walking along the shoreline of the East River Community. We need young naturalists’ help illustrating the text of our guide with your black and white images, sized from 8 x 11 up to 16 x 20 inches of the following– (You can search for on-line images to use as a reference)
1. City Skyline as seen from the East River waterfront

2. Fish with eggs (specific species include, white perch, grubby, hake, winter flounder, bluefish, porgy, fluke, tautog, seahorses)
3. Shrimp, crabs, mussels & oysters
4. Herons, cormorants, egrets
5. Cars on FDR as seen from the water
6. Bridges: RFK, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Williamsburg, Queensboro.
7. Algae
8. Factories, sewage outfall or farm runoff
9. Fishermen
10. Kayakers, Rowboats, ferries

You may submit up to 3 images in any of the ten categories listed above. Please send your submissions to

Our estuary guide about the East River Estuary ecosystem will be published with support from Partnership for Parks. The guide will be distributed citywide to the public through environmental and educational organizations and posted as a pdf on our website at www.eastrivercrew.org. Artists will be given credit in the guide for their contributions.

By submitting their work, artists acknowledge that their submissions will not be returned and become exclusive property of East River CREW. Deadline is March 30. All submissions must be signed by the artist on the front, and have the artist’s name, phone or email, and residence printed clearly on the back of the submission. Only submissions that follow these guidelines are eligible for publication.
